NCHRP Project 20-5

The National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) has a project in place calling for the "Synthesis of Highway Practice 322--Safety Management Systems in Practice". The Iowa Toolbox of Highway Safety Strategies has been cited as a model for this project. FHWA Best Practices
|
The report, National Review of the Highway Safety Improvement Program, discusses the best practices identified from a review of programs conducted in six States (Delaware, Oregon, Connecticut, Florida, Ohio and Iowa) by a team consisting of representatives from the Safety Core Business Unit (Ken Epstein and Carl Hayden) and the field (Gary Corino and Don Neumann). Iowa SMS was one of the first recipients of the Federal Highway Administration's (FWHA) Partnership in Excellence Award. This award honors the partnership efforts of State and Local Governments, private industry, other federal agencies and FHWA working together to help insure the best possible transportation system for the traveling public.
