The Iowa Motorcycle Forum was held in Ames, Iowa, on November 22, 2003. This forum provided the opportunity for collaboration among the many stakeholders in highway safety.

The Iowa SMS Toolbox of Highway Safety Strategies was compiled with this sort of multidisciplinary collaboration and includes a chapter focused on motorcycle safety. This toolbox chapter provided background materials for discussion. The current national and state statistics were reported by Bob Thompson, Program Evaluator, Iowa Governor’s Traffic Safety Bureau (GTSB); and Scott Falb, Driver Safety Specialist, Iowa Department of Transportation (DOT).

Quick Summary

At the close of the forum, participants agreed that compiling informational material with current statistics and meaningful safety information for motorcyclists and other motorists would be a good tool for the various stakeholders to share and use when communicating with the public. A volunteer group of stakeholders later prepared materials for "Stay Alert Stay Alive" for May 2004 Safety Awareness Month.

Participants also discussed and listed a wide range of potential strategies for drivers, public awareness education, vehicle design, traffic regulations, and roadways that might help improve motorcycle safety in Iowa. These are recorded with no specific recommendations for which of these are appropriate or timely for Iowa.
