The following table lists some of the current SMS efforts underway at this time.
| Effort | Description |
|---|---|
| "Don't Veer for Deer" | Iowa's deer-vehicle crash fatalities rose from a past average of two deaths a year to 12 in 2003. SMS helped the Department of Public Safety, the Department of Natural Resources, and stakeholders with public awareness materials and events. You may refer to the Don't Veer for Deer Campaign page on the Iowa DOT website for more information. |
| Motorcycle Safety "Stay Alert Stay Alive" campaign |
Motorcycle-related fatalities are on the rise in Iowa, nearly doubling in the last five years. SMS sponsored a Motorcycle Safety forum in 2003. A task force continues to develop motorist and motorcyclist awareness materials. You may refer to the Iowa Motorcycle Safety Forum page for more information about this forum as well as motorcycle-related crash data.
May 2004 Motorcycle Awareness materials and brochure are found on the DPS website. |
| Older Drivers | Iowa has one of the "oldest" driving populations in the United States. Older drivers are more at risk and their numbers are growing. Following the 2002 Older Drivers Forum, SMS is supporting regional follow-ups such as the May 2004 event in Davenport and the October 2004 forum in Council Bluffs. |
| Data Analysis | SMS supports a number of data reporting and analysis training efforts and helps sustain data tools development. |
| Communications Projects | A preliminary brainstorming began the process of developing Iowa's Highway Safety web portal. A task force is being commissioned to move ahead with this project. |
| Integrated Safety Management Process (ISMP) | Iowa is participating as a lead state in the NCHRP ISMP implementation. This model may help Iowa SMS improve its processes and successes. You may refer to the iTrans page in the "Conferences and Events" section of this website to access information about the NCHRP ISMP implementation. |
| Bicycle Safety | Following the successful classroom education pilot of "Safe Wheeler", Iowa DOT partnered with stakeholders to develop and distribute grade school curriculum statewide. SMS continues to provide incidental funding for ongoing efforts. You may refer to the Bicycles in Iowa page on the Iowa DOT website for more information about bicycle safety, as well as a description of the grade school curriculum. |
| Evaluation of Racial Differences in Seat Belt and Child Restraint Use: A Review of Current Literature | This reports on a literature review conducted to evaluate differences in seat belt use by race. Elements studied included overall seat belt use, racial differences in seat belt use, overall child restraint use, racial differences in child restraint use, and information about seat belt and child restraint use specific to Iowa. |
| Run Off Road Crashes | The top category for fatalities in Iowa is "run off road" crashes. Iowa recently adopted a new paved shoulder policy and engineers statewide are learning new ways to implement low-cost solutions. Iowa is participating in the NCHRP ROR Lead State program with State Safety Engineer Tom Welch, P.E., representing Iowa. The group is developing series 500 implementation guide books. |
| School Bus Passing | The school bus passing video pilot study helped develop tools for local schools, law enforcement, and public awareness. Phase II is underway to evaluate digital camera use. |
| Young Drivers | SMS recognizes the high risk of young drivers and hopes to see the Iowa GDL laws continue to improve young driver safety. SMS sponsored the Graduated Driving License video "Heads Up" now available with classroom presenters from the Iowa DOT Office of Driver Services. Contact your local license station for information. |
| Safety Education and Networking Events | SMS has supported or partnered with other organizations to provide networking and learning events. Some of these include: Iowa Traffic Safety Control Association (ITCSA), Iowa Association of Safety Educators (IASE), Iowa Intelligent Transportation Systems, Statewide Traffic Records Advisory Committee (STRAC) Forum, Local Multi-Discipline Safety Teams (MDST's), and Safety Conscious Planning. |
